Change of server, what you need to know

Thanks to your donations, the Mesnie will finally be able to change servers! Many thanks to all of you!

Over the weekend, the great migration will begin...

I'll get straight to the heart of the matter by telling you that a change of server = a change of IP. So what can we expect?

  • mesnie.org and ts.mesnie.org will remain accessible, we will redirect them when everything is ready on the new server.
  • the IPs of the game servers will change, so you'll have to redo your favourites
  • there may be a few service interruptions, although we'll do our best to keep them to a minimum
  • maintenance is going to be very heavy, and if you notice a fault after maintenance, don't hesitate to report it!

Ah, you should have made a donation... Why?

The basic idea was to protect ourselves against constant DDoS attacks, so we had 2 choices: Stay with Online.net and pay extra for anti-DDoS protection, or for the same price, switch to OVH and get protection + a much better server. We logically chose the 2nd option. The only problem was that OVH charges €100 for installation, so as two small backers we needed everyone to pitch in a bit, and you did, to the best of your ability - well done and thank you!

Donations, forever?

For the moment, they're still very welcome as we're paying for the server out of our own pocket with CrazyKleiner, but interesting paying services are planned for the relatively near future, for the moment only on Garry's Mod, in the hope that beyond significantly reducing our monthly costs we'll be able to finance an additional server and so on...

In fact, the Mesnie might need to become an association, something that has been discussed since its creation with certain founders such as our late Yoald (a thought for you if you're reading this!).

So, what's new on this bike?

For the hardware geeks reading this, our machine will evolve as follows:

  • Xeon E3-1120 V2 @3.1Gz => Xeon E5-1620 V2 @3.7Ghz (+30% performance)
  • 16GB RAM => 64GB RAM (x4)
  • 2x1TB RAID 1 => 2x2TB RAID 1 (x2)
  • 200mbits/s guaranteed symmetrical => 500mbits/s guaranteed symmetrical (x2.5)
  • 4 available IPs => 256 available IPs (x64)
  • anti DDoS protection that disrupts service for 8 hours after each attack => Arbor protection (MUCH MORE ENJOYMENT)

Thanks again to all of you, and soon it'll be time for hours of hard work on the command lines to set all this up! Enjoy the game!
